TEX HEX: Past Forward
Pop-Up Floating Cinema
curated by Deborah Stratman
May 2011

Project Description
A series of three screening events held on the Buffalo Bayou in Houston, aboard the Tex Hex watercraft, designed and built by SIMPARCH. Audiences gathered at pre-advertised spots along the shore and the Tex Hex arrived to deliver the films. The soundtracks from the films were broadcast onto FM, and could be tuned in by any audience member who brought a radio. In addition, audio was amplified via an on-board PA system.

Programs were as follows:

PAST FORWARD 1: BELIEVERS AND SURVIVORS Prescient looks at a decaying techno-future from a ideological past, with works by Cyprien Gaillard, Bradley Eros & Tim Geraghty, Marianna Milhorat and Pavel Medvedev.

PAST FORWARD 2: ENERGY FUTURES A trio of filmic meditations on the petro-chemical landscapes of the West, with works by Emily Richardson, Alain Resnais and Peter Mettler.

PAST FORWARD 3: VISIONARY TRANSPORT Some curious takes on transportation culture, with works by Buster Keaton, Kenneth Anger, Buckminster Fuller, Robert Nelson, Johann Lurff and Amanda Pope.

The Past Forward series was hosted by the Mitchell Center for the Arts and Buffalo Bayou Partnership.
