the Fern Room at the Lincoln Park Conservatory
Chicago, IL
in collaboration with Rob Ray.

Project Description
The public conservatory becomes a horto-fictional set, animated by selectively vibrating ferns. Plants turn into gossiping communicants, whispering rumors about an unforeseen. Solenoids programmed at rhythmic intervals control the vibration patterns and add a faint tapping clatter to the greenhouse interior, like an idiosyncratic Morse code. The vibration patterns were inspired by historic alphanumeric ciphers.

If sound is touch at a distance, Susurrati is a composition of trembles.

Susurrati was commissioned by Experimental Sound Studio for the Florasonic sound installation series, a partnership with the Chicago Park District curated by Lou Mallozzi.
